Every person is significantly different and reacts to medications differently. For example, both Vicodin and Percocet (common prescription medications used for pain) do not have the same effect on everyone. The same holds true for marijuana. Suppose you are a hyper person and drink a cup of coffee. Most likely you will feel quite anxious. A similar type of anxiety will probably be experienced if that same person tried certain strains of marijuana.
The following is a generalization and does not hold true 100% of the time. Sativas generally produce a stimulating effect and are commonly used for daytime medicating. There are also hybrids where the plants genetics involve both indica and sativa traits of varying percentages. While there can be side effects to using marijuana, some can be reduced by choosing the correct strain for you. Indicas tend to produce a more relaxing effect. THC or delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol is a major component of marijuana and also responsible for its psychoactive properties. Research has been focusing more on the cannabinoids where anti-inflammatory properties and other tumor suppression pathways are involved.

UK Announces drug-driving limits
Opinion: While we do not promote driving a motor vehicle under the influence of any decision altering substances it is important to see how the rest of the world is responding to marijuana reform. Interesting note that I have examined school bus drivers who have been prescribed valium along with pain medications. These medications were in their blood following an accident while driving a bus with children. Now should we have a better understanding of limits if any that should be tolerated?
U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder states he would be willing to work with congress to reschedule marijuana.
Opinion: This may not prevent people from being arrested; however, it would open the door to much needed research!

Netherlands schedule 19 prisons to be closed!
Summary: In the Netherlands where marijuana is decriminalized there are 19 prisons scheduled to be closed due to a decline in crime rates. They estimate $50,000 per year per person or $50 million dollars saved per year for every 1000 people. They feel as though progressive drug laws a changing of social behavior are a key to reducing incarceration.
Opinion:Maybe we could learn from this and put some of the money saved towards rehabilitation? Educate, train and support vs jail?
Overdose epidemic in Rhode Island
While there have never been a death associated with a marijuana overdose in the world, Rhode Island is experiencing a prescription and street drug overdose issue labeled as an “epidemic” by the Department of Health Director Dr Fine.
Opinion: Several of these patients started out in true pain but may have been poorly managed while prescribed excessive amounts of prescription pain medications with higher than required strengths. Due to hospital and private medical facilities patient satisfaction scores and a need to keep patients happy the word NO isn’t being used enough. Hospitals are striving to make patients happy at a significant cost to society. When discussing the cost to society we need to not only focus on the death toll but also those who survive but require a mental institution for assisted living, those who can no longer get a job and live off disability plans or others who are incarcerated and require $32,000 to $60,000 per inmate (based on the state).
City’s Annual Cost Per Inmate Is $168,000
Medical marijuana has been found to work best for extreme pain when used in conjunction with other pain medications. It has been proven that when patients utilize both drugs, the overall consumption of prescription pain medication is far less while the patient has better pain control. I would hypothesize that when used together the overall risk of prescription abuse will be greatly reduced.
Marijuana: how can we evaluate when a reference is credible?? Here are three reports the same unfortunate death where marijuana was involved.
Opinion: Marijuana becomes legal in Colorado and we have our first ever documented death from marijuana. Please read the following three articles. Each one written in their own way as if attempting to prove something. This is called bias. Prejudice in favor of or against one thing, person, or group compared with another, usually in a way considered to be unfair. As you sift through the internet and research you must be very careful of bias. I have read in the Providence Journal about a physician who doesn’t approve of medical marijuana. It was the only physician cited in the article and the practitioner happened to be a pain management specialist. This doctor injects steroids into backs and prescribes pharmaceuticals for relief. They don’t want to lose business to a natural substance people can obtain on their own. The other reference was a pharmacist who claims strict quantification of THC and Cannabinoid percentages are needed by qualified professionals. Do you think that a pharmacist is qualified? Is this an angle to gain access to this new field? Everyone has an angle except the patients!
Annual Causes of Death in the United States 2010
Deaths attributed to:
— Cannabis: ZERO.
—- Drug Overdoses: 38,329
of the Pharmaceuticals Opioids 75.2%, Benzodiazapines 29.4%, anti-depessants 17.6% anti seizure and
anti-parkinson disease drugs 7.8%
—- Alcohol Related Deaths: 25,692
Opinion: Many of these disease states such as cancer, heart, lungs or strokes are attributed to cigarette smoking indirectly. Therefore, the number of deaths caused by smoking cigarettes is not posted and difficult to accurately compute.. While cigarette sales bring tax dollars it causes a 10 fold increase as a higher cost to society.
Marijuana reduces the need for pain medications.
Modern medical marijuana research is focusing on Parkinson’s disease and seizure disorders with surprising results.
All of the following quotes were left out in the following two reports! Any thoughts as to why selective information is used? Bias.
Dr. Scott Bentz, Presbyterian St. Luke’s Med Center, said, “it’s not a typical toxidrome or a typical behavior related to ingesting marijuana or eating marijuana.”
Dr. Scott Bentz said, “marijuana in its inhaled or ingested forms don’t typical cause a loss of impulse control or erratic behavior.”
The medical examiner did find the active ingredient in marijuana in Pongi’s blood, but then says if he had a negative reaction his behavior should have been different.
The kids were pretty traumatized. They were 20 and 21 year old. Their friend just fell of a balcony. Probably an anticipated response. I guess that he was pushed by accident when they were goofing around and lied as to the events.

The teen’s autopsy found him having 7.2 nanograms of active THC per millimeter of blood. The state law in impaired driving cases sets a standard of 5 nanograms per milliliter. I found this informative; however, requires more information. A medical marijuana patient should have a better idea of how much this might be similar to 3 beers in a hour will give a person approximately a .06 blood alcohol count.
